FARO Goals & Activities

The goal of FARO is to expand upon, and merge, the frameworks created by the SAFARI and ChloroGIN programmes, which have laid the foundation for more effective management strategies on both national and international levels. FARO aims to integrate and foster the widespread usage of ocean-colour data into sustainable fisheries and related practices. This core goal will bring together experts from SAFARI and ChloroGIN at international levels to help understand ecosystem structure and function in the ocean, and to help implement ecosystem-based management for sustainable fisheries on an international scale. FARO also aims to continue the capacity building initiatives, within Canada, that were initiated under SAFARI, and to extend this outreach to developing nations via ChloroGIN.

FARO will continue SAFARI's effort to improve spatially-based planning and management techniques through use of an ecosystem-based approach to stewardship of the ocean.

Proposed FARO activities will include:

  • evaluating interactions between aquaculture and environment;
  • assessing impacts of climate variability on aquatic ecosystems;
  • assessing aquatic ecosystems for support of international oceans management;
  • addressing the emerging issue of high-seas governance;
  • conducting national capacity building workshops and extending this outreach to developing nations via ChloroGIN; and
  • refine in situ chlorophyll measurements through workshops and advocating their common use in regional networks.
